2004 年微软推出了最早支持 MSN Direct 服务的 SPOT 智能手表系列，有了 MSN Direct 服务，可以直接在手表上接收天气、新闻、股票、体育、地图等信息，甚至还有 Messenger 消息。这比如今的一些 Android 智能手表早了 7 年。

然而，随后微软又为 MSN Direct 服务推出了其他的一些 Geek 硬件设备，比如导航设备（包括来自 Garmin、Pioneer 等的），还有智能煮咖啡器。

就在 2009 年 10 月底，微软遗憾地宣布了将在 2012 年 1 月 1 日正式停止 MSN Direct 服务。如今时间已到，原官网已经撤下。

MSN Direct 主页公告称，微软 MSN 将于 2012 年 1 月 1 日正式停止全部 MSN Direct 服务，由于 MSN Direct 采用的是服务订阅模式，因此相关服务使用期限问题可访问 FAQ 了解。

微软于 2004 年推出了 MSN Direct 服务，最早还只支持智能手表系列，而如今 MSN Direct 已经支持导航设备（包括来自 Garmin、Pioneer 等的设备），甚至还有智能煮咖啡器。

MSN Direct 服务仅支持美国和加拿大（部分地区）。

MSN Direct API “发送至 GPS” 推出

今天微软宣布了一个 MSN Direct API，允许网站可以通过无线或者 USB 连接发送定位信息至导航设备：

MSN Direct opens up opportunities for Web sites in a variety of areas — real estate, travel, event planning and food service — to make it fast and simple for visitors to have access to turn-by-turn directions on their navigation device,” said Joe Coco, product unit manager of the MSN Direct initiative at Microsoft. “MSN Direct helps consumers get the most out of their navigation device, while also helping businesses drive more customers to their locations.”

MSN Direct 包括：SPOT 手表和一些附件，现在已经和 GPS 设备以及 Windows Mobile 手机整合了，这对于广大的用户来说是有利的。

With this technology preview, customers can receive instant access to information such as weather and stock updates; top news stories; and entertainment, sports and business news. The information is presented in a glanceable format, and is easily accessible directly from the home screen of a device. Content is automatically updated so that customers have immediate access to the content that matters most to them.

“This is the first time MSN Direct content has been made available to mobile phones, and it is a strong next step for the delivery of MSN Direct content where customers have said they need it the most,” said Eric Lang, general manager of the MSN Direct initiative at Microsoft. “We are excited about the opportunities this new application will bring to mobile operators, consumers and the industry.”

After installing the technology preview on the device, customers can select content based on relevancy and preference. For more in-depth information on the topics a person is exploring, MSN Direct provides links that connect users to the relevant areas of the popular MSN Mobile portal. Together, MSN Direct and MSN Mobile provide users with quick and easy options for getting current information while on the go.

Among the Virtual Earth news (stop by our booth if you’re at the show for more) is our announcement with Garmin that their latest Portable Navigation Devices can receive individual Waypoints (addresses, business listings, any pushpin) as well as entire Live Maps Collections sent from your PC or Mac. What is unique here is that you don’t need to physically connect your PND to your PC and it doesn’t need to have a connection to the internet as the data is transmitted over FM airwaves. This enables you to do your trip planning at home on your PC with Live Search Maps and when you are done select the new ‘Send to GPS’ menu to have your location information transmitted to your Navigation device automatically.
