Hotmail 简史

接着上次的 Hotmail 工程和数据，Hotmail 项目组经理 Dick Craddock 在 Inside Windows Live 博客上简述了 Hotmail 的历史。

Hotmail 由 Sabeer Bhatia 和 Jack Smith 创立于硅谷、1996 年 7 月 4 日，它曾是第一批免费 Web 电子邮件服务之一，名为“HoTMaiL”（强调它是基于 HTML 的）。

1997 年末，微软收购了 HoTMaiL，并将其归入了 MSN 旗下。不久之后，微软又收购了在线日历服务 Jump。（更多历史可参考维基百科）

而服务器架构方面，Hotmail 工程团队在 2004 年已经将 Hotmail 服务完全从基于 Unix 的服务器迁移至了 Windows Server + SQL Server。而最近，Hotmail 服务器端已经部署了最新版 SQL Server。

2005 年，Hotmail 工程团队重写了前端系统，并重建了 Hotmail 和 Calendar 服务。之前的 Hotmail 是用 C++ 和 Perl 语言编写的，而现在是由 C# 和 ASP.Net。

Windows Live 团队中负责测试与系统工程的 Arthur de Haan 在 Inside Windows Live 博客介绍了 Windows Live Hotmail 产品背后的工程信息。

以下为 Arthur de Haan 提到的一些 Hotmail 的数据和信息：

Hotmail 已支持 59 个地区市场，36 种语言
Hotmail 已托管超过 13 亿邮箱（一些用户拥有多个）
每月有超过 3 亿 5 千万活动用户使用 Hotmail（2009 年 8 月，comScore 数据）
Hotmail 每天处理 30 亿封邮件，过滤超过 10 亿封垃圾邮件（直接放入垃圾邮件文件夹）
Hotmail 的存储每月增加 2 PB 数据
Hotmail 目前已使用 155 PB 数据，70% 存储用于附件，尤其是照片
Hotmail 服务器端部署的是 SQL Server 2008，部署规模为世界最大

微软开发的开源内容管理系统（CMS）Oxite

微软开发的内容管理系统 CMS，代号 Oxite 已经通过 Microsoft Public License (MS-Pl) 协议在 CodePlex 公开所有源代码，并提供了下载。目前版本 Alpha，并且源代码是在 12 月 5 日提供下载的。

翻译自微软对 Oxite 的介绍，如下：

“Oxite 为你提供了一个强大的基础 – 支持 Pingback, Trackback，匿名或者验证评论，Gravatar 头像，任何页面基础上的 RSS Feeds，MetaWebLog API，管理面板，允许用户通过浏览器搜索框进行搜索的开放搜索格式（Open Search），以及更多功能。

Oxite 是利用 ASP.NET MVC 编写的，采用了 SQL Server 数据库和 Live Search 搜索技术。”

尽管微软的企业级产品 SharePoint 也提供了内容管理功能，甚至更强大，而 SharePoint 和 Oxite 最明显的区别就是 Oxite 是开源的，SharePoint 不是。另外，微软的 Mix Online 就是基于 Oxite 的。

至于 LiveSino 会不会迁移至 Oxite 博客呢？我觉得是不会的，没有足够强有力的理由驱使我将 LiveSino 从 WordPress 转移至 Oxite；而且 WordPress 很优秀，也很令我喜欢。还有，Codename H 主题也应该快发布叻。敬请期待。

SQL Server 2008 的新标志

微软在 TechED 2008 正式推出了 SQL Server 2008 的新标志 Logo。另外一些关于这个标志的信息：

Strengthen our connection with customers and partners
Visually support key attributes such as “integration”, “innovation”, and “enterprise class”, which are important attributes for our customers and partners
Provide customers and partners with an important visual distinction from Microsoft desktop software
New category colors (“color coding”) were designed to make it easier for customers and partners to navigate our breadth offering and understand our solution-oriented categories

这个动态的网格状的新 Logo，是由微软 Server and Tools 部门下属的四种产品所共有的，而每种产品的标志 Logo 按照下列的颜色区分：

IT Management – 蓝色
Security – 绿色
Application Infrastructure – 深红色
Business Productivity Infrastructure – 深黄色

SQL Server 家族产品和技术是属于 Application Infrastructure 部门的。
